Research on adults with ADHD finds that time-based prospective memory in particular — remembering to do something at a certain time — is significantly impaired.⁵ The intention was real when you formed it. Is it ADHD forgetfulness — or something else?

7 ways to forget less with ADHD
The theme is one idea: get it out of your head and into the world. Pick one or two to start.
- Capture it the instant it appears. The moment a thought, task, or intention shows up, write it down or voice-note it immediately — before your attention moves and it’s gone. The rule is “capture now, sort later,” because the gap between thinking it and recording it is exactly where ADHD drops things.
- Keep one place, not five. Funnel everything — appointments, tasks, reminders — into a single calendar or list you actually check, rather than scattering notes across apps, paper, and memory. One trusted system beats five half-used ones.
- Set reminders at the point of performance. Don’t remind yourself to take meds in the abstract; put the reminder where and when you’ll act — an alarm at the actual time, the pills by the toothbrush, the gym bag by the door. Trigger the memory at the moment it’s needed.
